The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken up a plea filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, challenging the Punjab Cabinet’s decision to pursue serious legal action against him.
A two-member bench, presided over by Justice Farooq Haider, convened to deliberate on Khan’s petition contesting the Punjab government’s move. The court sought clarification regarding the Punjab Cabinet’s stance on initiating serious legal proceedings against Imran Khan.
The proceedings resulted in the adjournment of the hearing until June 12, with the LHC awaiting a formal response from the Punjab government regarding the matter.
Earlier in May, the Punjab Cabinet, under Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, sanctioned the initiation of new legal proceedings against Imran Khan and other PTI leaders. These actions were purportedly based on allegations of propagating a “hate narrative” against state institutions, particularly the military.
Senior counsel Latif Khosa submitted the petition on behalf of Imran Khan, naming the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Interior Minister, and others as respondents. The petition highlighted Khan’s previous incarceration in Adiala Jail on various charges and requested the court to restrain the government from sanctioning further legal action against the PTI founder.
