Asim Munir Visits Tehran as Pakistan Intensifies Iran-US Peace Mediation

Syed Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday as part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States amid the continuing regional conflict. According to ISPR, the army chief was welcomed by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, while Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the reception.

During the visit, Field Marshal Munir is expected to hold talks with senior Iranian leaders on the Iran-US negotiations, regional peace, bilateral cooperation, and the evolving Middle East situation.

The visit comes as Pakistan continues efforts to revive stalled peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Earlier rounds of direct talks, hosted in Islamabad in April after a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire, ended without a final agreement but remained open for further dialogue.

Despite a fragile ceasefire, tensions remain high due to the US blockade of Iranian ports and Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz — a key global oil route. The conflict has already disrupted global markets and increased oil prices.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s mediation role, calling Islamabad the “primary interlocutor” in the Iran talks and praising its diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, a Qatari delegation also arrived in Tehran to support negotiations aimed at ending the conflict and restoring regional stability.
