Apple (AAPL.O) is reportedly developing a range of specialized chips to power upcoming products, including its first smart glasses, artificial intelligence servers, and new MacBooks, according to Bloomberg News.
The company has made significant progress on a custom chip designed for the smart glasses, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. This move signals Apple’s intent to challenge Meta Platforms (META.O), whose Ray-Ban smart glasses have gained popularity.
In addition to the smart glasses chip, Apple is said to be working on processors for future Mac computers and AI servers that will support its Apple Intelligence platform. This suite includes on-device AI features for summarizing notifications, rewriting emails, and accessing OpenAI’s ChatGPT on newer iPhones.
The chip for the smart glasses reportedly draws inspiration from the Apple Watch’s low-power architecture, making it highly energy-efficient and capable of managing multiple built-in cameras. According to Bloomberg, the chip could enter mass production by late 2026 or early 2027, and is being manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (2330.TW). If successful, the glasses could launch within the next two years.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
The company continues to expand its in-house chip capabilities. In February, it unveiled its first custom-designed modem chip for wireless connectivity in iPhones. Additionally, Apple is developing next-generation Mac chips, likely to be branded as the M6 and M7.
These developments reflect Apple’s deepening focus on AI and hardware innovation as it looks to stay ahead in the competitive consumer tech landscape.
