In response to the deepening crisis in Sudan, the UN Security Council expressed “alarm” at the increasing violence in the war-torn country, a day after revealing that seven million people have been displaced by the conflict. The Council strongly condemned attacks on civilians and the expansion of conflict into areas hosting large populations of internally displaced persons, refugees, and asylum seekers. The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, exacerbated by the conflict that erupted on April 15, prompted the Council to call for rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access throughout the country. With the city of Wad Madani also affected by the spreading violence, the Council urged immediate measures to address the crisis and condemned the recent attack on an International Committee of the Red Cross convoy. The conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo has led to a devastating toll, with conservative estimates suggesting the loss of 12,190 lives.
