Istanbul Airport Becomes World’s Best-Connected AirportFocus

Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport has taken the top position in the latest global aviation rankings, overtaking London Heathrow to become the world’s best-connected airport. The achievement highlights Istanbul’s growing role as a major international travel hub connecting Europe, Asia, the Middle East and destinations around the world.

The ranking comes from the OAG Megahubs 2026 Index, which compares airports based on their international connectivity. The results reflect Istanbul’s transformation from a major regional gateway into one of the most important aviation hubs in the world.

Istanbul’s Strategic Location

Istanbul’s importance as a transportation centre is not new.

The city has stood at the crossroads of Europe and Asia for centuries. During the periods when it was known as Byzantium and Constantinople, its location allowed it to play an important role in trade between different regions.

Its position also became significant during the development of international rail travel. Istanbul was famously connected to the Orient Express, which linked the city with major European destinations.

Today, the same geographical advantage is being applied to modern aviation.

Istanbul Airport is located on the European side of the city, around 20 miles from central Istanbul. Its position allows airlines to use the city as a convenient connecting point between multiple continents.

How the Megahub Ranking Works

The OAG Megahubs Index measures airport connectivity by examining scheduled international flight connections and the number of destinations available from each airport.

The methodology uses a snapshot of the busiest day of the year to assess the number of possible connections. For the 2026 ranking, the analysis focused on August 2.

According to OAG chief analyst John Grant, Istanbul has finally secured the number one position after competing with some of the world’s most established aviation hubs.

The ranking places Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in third position, while Kuala Lumpur International Airport ranks fourth. Chicago O’Hare completes the top five.

The results demonstrate how competition between global airports is changing as newer facilities expand their networks and attract additional airlines and passengers.

A Huge Airport Built for Scale

One of the most striking features of Istanbul Airport is its enormous size.

The airport opened in 2018 following a major investment of around $12 billion. Its terminal covers approximately 1.4 million square metres, making it the world’s largest airport terminal under one roof.

The overall airport site covers about 76.5 million square metres. That is larger than the island of Manhattan, highlighting the scale of the project.

The airport was designed with long-term expansion in mind rather than simply meeting Istanbul’s immediate aviation requirements.

Its infrastructure provides space for additional terminals, runways and other facilities as passenger demand increases.

More Than 84 Million Passengers

The scale of the airport is also reflected in its passenger numbers.

More than 84 million passengers pass through Istanbul Airport each year, placing it among the world’s busiest airports.

Despite this already significant traffic, the long-term plan is considerably more ambitious. The airport is designed to eventually handle up to 200 million passengers annually.

That potential capacity would place the airport on an entirely different scale from most international aviation hubs.

For comparison, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, currently the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic, handles roughly half that number annually.

Istanbul’s Growing Global Role

The airport’s rapid rise reflects Turkey’s broader ambition to strengthen Istanbul’s role as an international transportation and business centre.

For passengers, strong connectivity can make Istanbul an attractive transfer point for journeys between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Airlines can also benefit from using a centrally positioned hub to connect multiple markets through a single airport.

The airport’s management says it currently serves approximately 350 destinations worldwide and believes there is significant room for further expansion.

This combination of location, infrastructure and airline connectivity has helped Istanbul Airport establish itself among the world’s most important aviation facilities.

What Comes Next?

Taking the top position in the OAG Megahubs 2026 Index is a major milestone, but the airport’s long-term ambitions extend far beyond connectivity rankings.

With infrastructure designed for substantial expansion and a potential capacity of 200 million passengers a year, Istanbul’s aviation hub could become even more significant in the coming decades.

The airport’s success also reflects the enduring importance of Istanbul’s geography. For centuries, the city has connected different parts of the world through trade, railways and maritime routes.

Now, aviation is carrying that role into a new era.

As global air travel continues to expand, Istanbul Airport is positioned to play an increasingly important role in connecting passengers, airlines and economies across continents.
