Microsoft is expanding the capabilities of Microsoft 365 Copilot by bringing Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 model to more of its productivity applications. The move gives users greater flexibility when choosing an AI model for tasks such as research, planning, writing, analysis and workflow automation. Instead of relying on a single AI provider, Microsoft is increasingly allowing users and organizations to select the model that best fits their needs.
Microsoft’s Growing Claude Partnership
Microsoft first introduced Anthropic models into its Copilot ecosystem in September 2025. At that time, Claude Opus 4.1 was made available through the Researcher agent, while Claude Opus 4.1 and Sonnet 4 were integrated into Copilot Studio.
Since then, Microsoft has significantly expanded its support for Claude. The latest update makes Claude Opus 5 available through the model selector in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Copilot Chat, Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio.
This expansion represents a major development in Microsoft’s approach to workplace AI. Rather than limiting customers to models from one provider, the company is building Copilot into a platform where different AI systems can be used according to the requirements of individual tasks.
Claude Opus 5 Comes to More Apps
Users of Microsoft 365 Copilot can now select Claude Opus 5 in several applications, giving them another option for demanding AI-assisted work.
In Copilot Chat, Microsoft says Claude Opus 5 is particularly useful for open-ended problems, planning, comparing alternatives and tasks that require advanced reasoning. These capabilities could be useful for professionals who need to evaluate complex information before making decisions.
Copilot Cowork is designed for longer-running projects that involve multiple files and tools. With Claude Opus 5 available, users can potentially use the model for projects requiring extended reasoning and coordination across different sources.
Copilot Studio provides another important use case. Businesses can use the platform to create AI agents powered by Claude Opus 5. These agents can support reasoning, automate workflows and complete multi-step business processes.
Microsoft Embraces a Multi-Model Strategy

Microsoft’s Researcher agent is another area where the multi-model approach is becoming visible.
The agent supports both GPT and Claude models, with administrators able to enable Anthropic models for users. This allows Claude to assist with complex research involving information from the web as well as organizational data.
That organizational data can include files, emails, meetings and chats. Bringing multiple sources together can make AI research more useful for employees who need to understand large amounts of company information.
