Mohsin Naqvi, the current Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is poised to take over as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) starting January 2025. This transition marks a significant moment for regional cricket as Naqvi is set to lead the ACC for a two-year term.
Currently, the ACC is led by Jay Shah of India, who also serves as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Shah’s term as ACC Secretary was extended for an additional year in January 2024, following his initial appointment in 2021. The ACC presidency rotates among its member countries, and Naqvi’s upcoming role reflects this rotation policy.
Naqvi’s appointment is anticipated to be formalized in the upcoming ACC meeting scheduled for October-November this year. Alongside his new role at the ACC, Naqvi continues to serve as the PCB Chairman, a position he has held since February 2024. Additionally, he is also the Interior Minister of Pakistan, showcasing his extensive involvement in both cricket and national governance.
In managing his dual roles, Naqvi has decided to delegate some of his responsibilities within the PCB to Waqar Younis, a former captain of the Pakistan cricket team. Younis will take on the role of advisor for cricket affairs, handling matters related to both international and domestic cricket, the selection committee, and player No Objection Certificates (NOCs). This decision is in line with the PCB’s 2014 Constitution, which allows the board chairman to distribute or share responsibilities with another official.
Naqvi’s leadership at the ACC and his strategic delegation of duties within the PCB are expected to enhance the management and development of cricket across the region, as well as streamline administrative processes within the PCB.
