Accelerated App Launch Makes Edge 33% Faster on Windows 11

Accelerated App Launch

Microsoft has introduced Accelerated App Launch, a new Windows 11 feature designed to make Microsoft Edge open faster, especially when users are running multiple applications. According to the company, the improvement can reach 33% during heavy multitasking, while typical launch times are around 15% faster. The feature reduces the delay involved in opening a browser window when Edge is already running in the background.

The update is aimed at improving everyday performance rather than changing how users interact with the browser. People who frequently switch between applications, open links, or work with several windows may notice the difference.

What Is Accelerated App Launch?

Accelerated App Launch is a Windows feature that helps the operating system communicate more directly with an application that is already running.

Under the traditional process, when someone clicks the Edge icon on the taskbar or opens a web link, Windows checks whether the browser is already active. It starts an additional process to locate an existing Edge instance before opening the requested window.

This process normally takes very little time. However, when a computer is handling several applications simultaneously, the extra step can contribute to slower startup times.

The new feature removes much of that unnecessary work. When Microsoft Edge starts, it registers itself with Windows. The operating system can then communicate directly with the existing browser process when the user launches it again.

As a result, Windows can display the requested browser window more quickly.

How Much Faster Does Microsoft Edge Open?

Microsoft reports that Edge launches approximately 15% faster under typical conditions with Accelerated App Launch enabled. During heavy multitasking, the improvement can reach 33%.

The actual results may vary depending on the computer, running applications, and whether Edge is already active. The biggest benefit is expected when the browser remains open or operates in the background.

It is important to understand that this feature does not make every Edge startup equally faster. If a user has completely closed the browser and launches it after a fresh system startup, the same improvement may not apply.

Accelerated App Launch is designed specifically to make subsequent launches faster when an existing browser process is available.

Windows 11 Update and Compatibility

To use Accelerated App Launch, users need Microsoft Edge version 150 or newer, along with a compatible Windows 11 installation.

Microsoft lists support for Windows 11 versions 25H2, 26H1, and 26H2 with the October 2026 update or later. The required update, KB5127936, is being offered as an optional non-security preview for supported Windows 11 versions.

Users should check their Windows Update settings and installed Edge version to determine whether their devices meet the requirements.

The October update also includes other changes beyond browser performance. These include a redesigned File Explorer context menu and a Cloud Rebuild recovery option.

Cloud Rebuild allows Windows to be reinstalled using installation files downloaded through Windows Update. This can be useful when the operating system has problems and cannot start normally.

Could Google Chrome Get the Same Feature?

Although Microsoft Edge is currently the first browser to support Accelerated App Launch, the technology may eventually become available in other Chromium-based browsers.

Microsoft is contributing the relevant changes to Chromium, the open-source browser project that forms the foundation of several popular browsers, including Google Chrome, Brave, and Vivaldi.

This means developers of these browsers could potentially use the same approach to improve application startup on Windows 11.

However, Microsoft has not announced a confirmed release date for support in other browsers. Users should therefore not assume that Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers already offer the feature.

Microsoft is also exploring whether the technology could improve the process of opening PDF files, although further details have not been provided.

What This Means for Windows 11 Users

Accelerated App Launch is a relatively small change, but it addresses a delay that users can encounter during everyday computer use. Faster access to an already-running browser can make switching between applications feel smoother, particularly on systems handling demanding workloads.

For people who regularly open links from documents, messaging applications, or other desktop software, the improvement could make browsing more responsive.

The feature does not replace hardware upgrades or solve every performance issue. Instead, it optimises how Windows interacts with an application that is already active.

With Microsoft contributing the technology to Chromium, its potential impact could extend beyond Edge in the future. For now, compatible Windows 11 users running the latest Edge version can benefit from the faster launch process.
