The Pakistan hockey team produced a stunning comeback against South Korea, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to win 5-3 and secure the men’s hockey bronze medal at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Saturday. The victory capped an impressive campaign and gave Pakistan a place on the podium after a dramatic final quarter.
Pakistan started the bronze-medal match brightly, with Sufyan Khan opening the scoring in the fourth minute. South Korea quickly responded, however, as Gangsan Lee found the net in the 12th minute to level the contest at 1-1 by the end of the opening quarter.
South Korea Takes Control
The Pakistan hockey team faced increasing pressure during the second quarter as South Korea took control of the match. Yongbok Kim scored in the 18th minute to give Korea a 2-1 advantage before Jihun Yang extended the lead in the 25th minute.
With South Korea leading 3-1, Pakistan needed a response before halftime. Abdul Rehman provided it in the 30th minute, scoring Pakistan’s second goal and reducing the deficit to 3-2.
The goal gave Pakistan renewed momentum heading into the second half, although South Korea remained in front after two quarters.
Goalless Third Quarter
Neither side managed to score during the third quarter, despite opportunities at both ends. Pakistan earned three penalty corners during the period, while South Korea had one.
The inability to convert those opportunities meant the match remained finely balanced heading into the final quarter. Pakistan needed two goals to level the contest, while South Korea was only 15 minutes away from securing the bronze medal.
The Pakistan hockey team, however, saved its best performance for the closing stages.
Dramatic Final-Quarter Comeback
Pakistan’s comeback began in the 52nd minute when Rana Waheed Ashraf scored to make it 3-3. Just two minutes later, he struck again to complete the turnaround and put Pakistan ahead for the first time since the opening stages.
South Korea was suddenly under pressure as Pakistan continued attacking. Hannan Shahid then scored in the 59th minute to make it 5-3 and effectively settle the bronze-medal contest.
The three goals in the final quarter transformed the match and completed one of Pakistan’s most memorable comebacks of the tournament.
Strong Campaign in Asian Games
The Pakistan hockey team entered the semi-finals after finishing second in Pool B with four victories and one defeat.
Pakistan began its campaign with a commanding 9-0 victory over Thailand. The team followed that result with a 5-1 win against Uzbekistan before producing another convincing performance against China, defeating them 3-0.
The team’s winning run was eventually interrupted by Malaysia, who secured a narrow 5-4 victory in Pakistan’s fourth Pool B match. Pakistan responded strongly in its next game, defeating Oman 7-2 to confirm its place in the semi-finals.
The results helped Pakistan finish second in Pool B with nine points and a positive goal difference of 16.
Semi-Final Setback Against India
Pakistan’s route to the bronze medal included a closely contested semi-final against traditional rivals India. The two teams produced an entertaining match, but India eventually won 4-3 to advance to the final.
The defeat ended Pakistan’s hopes of competing for gold, but the team had another opportunity to finish the tournament with a medal.
Facing South Korea in the bronze-medal match, Pakistan showed resilience after falling two goals behind. Rather than allowing the deficit to determine the result, the players continued to attack and eventually turned the match around.
Bronze Medal for Pakistan
The victory over South Korea marked another important achievement for the Pakistan hockey team at the Asian Games. The comeback was particularly notable because Pakistan entered the final quarter trailing 3-2 before scoring three unanswered goals.
Rana Waheed Ashraf played a decisive role in the turnaround with two goals in the space of just two minutes. Hannan Shahid then provided the finishing touch with Pakistan’s fifth goal in the 59th minute.
After the final whistle, Pakistan’s players celebrated their bronze-medal success, bringing a positive conclusion to their Asian Games campaign.
The Pakistan hockey team demonstrated attacking quality throughout the tournament, scoring heavily in several matches and recovering from setbacks along the way. Their wins over Thailand, Uzbekistan, China and Oman helped establish a strong foundation, while the comeback against South Korea ensured that the campaign ended with a medal.
The bronze medal also reflected Pakistan’s ability to respond under pressure. After losing the semi-final to India and falling behind South Korea in the bronze-medal match, the team regrouped when it mattered most.
With a 5-3 victory, the Pakistan hockey team finished its Asian Games campaign on the podium and provided fans with a dramatic comeback to remember.
