In his message for World AIDS Day 2024, he reiterated the importance of human rights and equitable access to healthcare for all.
Theme for 2024: “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right”
PM Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that this year’s theme underscores the critical link between human rights and the global fight against HIV/AIDS. “The journey to eliminate AIDS as a public health threat begins with a firm commitment to human rights,” he stated. He stressed the importance of upholding the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights and ensuring inclusivity across all communities to address this challenge effectively.
Addressing Inequalities and Strengthening Health Systems
The prime minister acknowledged HIV/AIDS as both a health and socio-economic challenge that disrupts families and exacerbates inequalities. He called for strategies that prioritize the most vulnerable, address gaps in testing and treatment, and adapt to the epidemic’s evolving dynamics.
“Through collective efforts, we will continue to strengthen our health systems and expand access to essential services equitably,” he said.
Challenges and Focus Areas
PM Shehbaz Sharif identified urgent priorities, including:
- Eliminating HIV spread through needle sharing among drug users.
- Ensuring safe blood transfusions.
- Preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission.
He also underscored the importance of bold and innovative interventions rooted in equality and inclusion to halt the spread of HIV.
Call for Stronger Commitment
The prime minister emphasized the need for strong political will, effective leadership, and increased financial investments to implement a rights-based national HIV strategy. “Healthcare is a fundamental right. By working together, we can ensure that all our citizens enjoy this right in an equitable manner,” he remarked.
