South Africa and Sri Lanka kick off a pivotal two-Test series at Kingsmead, Durban, on Wednesday, both vying for a shot at the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Victories in this series are critical for keeping their hopes alive as the WTC cycle nears its conclusion.
For South Africa, winning both matches against Sri Lanka and the upcoming home series against Pakistan would guarantee a spot in the final at Lord’s in June. Even three wins from their remaining four matches might suffice, thanks to their current standing. Despite playing only eight fixtures in this WTC cycle — less than half of England’s 19 — South Africa remain strong contenders.
The Proteas’ campaign was compromised earlier this year when they fielded a second-string side in New Zealand due to a clash with their domestic SA20 competition. However, captain Temba Bavuma remains optimistic:
“There’s lots of excitement. Things became a bit tricky for us after the New Zealand trip, but there was always a goal at the back of our minds. We understand the expectation and pressure will ramp up,” Bavuma said.
South Africa’s bowling attack, led by experienced pacers, remains their biggest asset, compensating for their inconsistent batting lineup.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, must win three of their four remaining matches — including two against South Africa and two at home against Australia early next year — to stay in contention for the WTC final.
Kamindu Mendis, Sri Lanka’s middle-order sensation, has been exceptional, averaging 91.27 in his 13 Test innings with five centuries and four fifties. However, he will face a new challenge on South Africa’s faster and bouncier wickets.
Sri Lanka’s history in South Africa is mixed. While they shocked the hosts with a 2-0 series win in 2019, their last visit in 2020-21 ended in comprehensive defeats. Overall, South Africa have won 13 of 17 home Tests against Sri Lanka, but at Kingsmead, the Lankans have an unbeaten record with two wins and a draw.
With both teams’ paths to the WTC final hanging in the balance, this series promises intense and high-quality cricket.
