Furiosa: A mad max saga” set for cannes film festival premiere.

Organizers announced Thursday that “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the latest installment in the post-apocalyptic franchise, will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15.

In this fifth film of the series, Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Furiosa, a character previously portrayed by Charlize Theron in 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which also debuted at Cannes in the same year.

Taylor-Joy stars opposite Chris Hemsworth, who plays the villainous Warlord Dementus, as Furiosa navigates through hostile gangs in her quest to return home.

Directed once again by the franchise’s creator, George Miller of Australia, this latest entry will be showcased out-of-competition at Cannes.

The Mad Max saga originated with a low-budget action film in 1979, launching the career of Mel Gibson. It depicted a near-future Australia grappling with societal collapse and oil shortages.

Following two sequels in the 1980s, the franchise made a triumphant return in 2015 with “Fury Road,” a visually stunning spectacle starring Tom Hardy that garnered critical acclaim and won six Academy Awards.

George Miller, known for his diverse filmmaking repertoire including children’s hits like “Babe” and “Happy Feet,” as well as the mythological tale “Three Thousand Years of Longing” premiered at Cannes in 2022.

The Cannes Film Festival, scheduled from May 14 to 25, will be chaired by Greta Gerwig, with the full lineup set to be announced on April 11.
