Imran Khan, while maintaining covert support from the establishment, tried to blackmail them as well. But his target was not civilian supremacy; it was a return to power, just like the others. The PPP, PML-N, and JUI-F also engaged in a fierce competition to gain the establishment’s favor. They all competed to see who could please the establishment the most.

On Friday, after a meeting between two influential figures, the government considered it necessary and of special importance to meet with the Law Minister, as the President of the country was exercising his constitutional authority to set the date for elections.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Gulzar Ahmed, is presiding over a three-member bench for this particular hearing. The bench comprises Justice Aijazul Hassan and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as well.

Nevertheless, if he chooses to resign from his position upon the completion of his term, the constitution provides a clear mechanism for the appointment of his replacement. So far, President Arif has not indicated whether he will step down or continue in his role.

The backdrop to these developments is a challenging economic situation in Pakistan, with rising prices and inflationary pressures taking a toll on the public. The opposition sees the government, and Imran Khan in particular, as responsible for these woes and is seeking to capitalize on the discontent among the masses.

Arif Alvi will officially become the Caretaker President of the country next week, and on that day, his formal term will come to an end. In this way, both the Prime Minister and the President in the country will hold the title of “caretaker.”
