Nicaraguan police have declared their intent to arrest Karen Celebertti, the director of the Miss Nicaragua pageant, accusing her of orchestrating rigged contests to ensure that anti-government beauty queens win pageants. The charges suggest a plot to overthrow the government, with allegations of Celebertti actively participating in protests against the government in 2018. The controversy arose when Miss Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios, who had participated in anti-government protests, won the Miss Universe competition. The government accuses Celebertti of conspiring with foreign agents to turn beauty contests into political traps. Celebertti, her husband, and son face charges of “treason to the motherland.”
