Digital rights group NOYB (None Of Your Business) has filed a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority against Meta Platforms, challenging the social media company’s paid no-ads subscription service introduced in Europe. NOYB contends that Meta’s subscription model, which charges users for an ad-free experience, contradicts the principle of genuine free will required by EU law for obtaining consent. The advocacy group also criticizes the imposed ‘privacy fee,’ urging the Austrian privacy authority to intervene and potentially impose fines. NOYB anticipates that the complaint will be forwarded to the Irish data protection watchdog, responsible for overseeing Meta’s European operations.
