The Maldives President Pakistan visit began on Tuesday as Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Islamabad for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The visit, scheduled for October 20 to 22, aims to strengthen diplomatic relations, expand economic cooperation and explore new opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.
President Muizzu was accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior officials. Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, the visiting president and first lady received a ceremonial welcome, including a 21-gun salute.
The visit holds particular significance because it is the first state visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in eleven years. It also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, established in 1966.
President Muizzu to Meet Pakistan’s Leadership
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, President Muizzu will receive an official welcome at the Prime Minister’s House. His programme includes meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside restricted and delegation-level discussions with the Pakistani premier.
President Zardari will also host a state banquet in honour of the visiting dignitary.
These high-level engagements are expected to provide an opportunity for both countries to review their existing relationship and identify areas where cooperation can be expanded. Discussions will cover political ties, economic engagement and shared interests in regional and international affairs.
The Maldives President Pakistan visit also reflects the importance both governments place on maintaining regular diplomatic contact and strengthening longstanding relations.
Trade and Investment Take Centre Stage
Economic cooperation is expected to be a major focus of the visit. Pakistan and the Maldives are exploring opportunities to strengthen trade, encourage investment and improve engagement between their respective business communities.
A key event will be the Pakistan–Maldives Business Forum, which is intended to bring businesses from both countries together. The forum will provide an opportunity to identify potential commercial partnerships, discuss investment prospects and explore ways to increase bilateral trade.
For Pakistan, stronger economic engagement with the Maldives could create opportunities for businesses interested in expanding their presence in the island nation. For the Maldives, closer cooperation could open avenues for partnerships with Pakistani companies across several sectors.
The countries are also expected to sign agreements and memorandums of understanding covering different areas of bilateral cooperation. The precise impact of these agreements will depend on their final terms and subsequent implementation.
By connecting government-level discussions with private-sector engagement, the visit aims to move beyond diplomatic goodwill towards practical economic outcomes.
Cooperation in Education, Health and Tourism
Beyond trade and investment, the two countries are expected to explore cooperation in health, education, agriculture and tourism.
Education and health partnerships could support exchanges of expertise, professional development and institutional collaboration. Agricultural cooperation may also offer opportunities to share knowledge and explore commercial links, depending on the needs and priorities of both countries.
Tourism is another important area for potential engagement. The Maldives is internationally known for its island resorts and marine attractions, while Pakistan offers diverse landscapes, historical sites and cultural destinations. Stronger tourism cooperation could encourage greater awareness of both countries and support people-to-people connections.
The two governments are also expected to discuss climate change, an issue of particular importance to the Maldives because of its vulnerability to rising sea levels and coastal risks. Pakistan also faces climate-related challenges, including floods, extreme weather and pressure on water resources.
Sharing experiences and strengthening cooperation on climate resilience could provide a basis for future joint initiatives.
Defence and Maritime Security on the Agenda
Defence and maritime security are also among the areas identified for discussion during the visit.
As countries connected to the wider Indian Ocean region, Pakistan and the Maldives have an interest in secure maritime routes, regional stability and cooperation on shared security concerns.
Dialogue in these areas could help strengthen institutional relationships and provide opportunities for the exchange of expertise. Any practical arrangements, however, would depend on the agreements reached by both governments.
The leaders will also exchange views on regional and international developments of mutual interest, reflecting their engagement in regional and multilateral forums.
Sixty Years of Diplomatic Relations
Pakistan and the Maldives established diplomatic relations in 1966 and have maintained ties based on mutual respect, goodwill and shared interests.
The anniversary provides an opportunity to assess the relationship and consider how it can adapt to changing economic and geopolitical circumstances. The current state visit signals a shared intention to strengthen the partnership and develop new areas of cooperation.
The Maldives President Pakistan visit is therefore both a diplomatic milestone and an opportunity to establish priorities for future engagement.
President Mohamed Muizzu’s three-day visit to Pakistan brings trade, investment, tourism, education, climate change and maritime security into focus. Meetings with Pakistan’s top leadership and the Pakistan–Maldives Business Forum are expected to support efforts to deepen bilateral relations.
As the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic ties, the key challenge will be turning commitments and proposed agreements into practical results. Successful implementation could strengthen economic links, expand cooperation and build a more dynamic partnership between Pakistan and the Maldives.
