The internet is entering a new phase as AI bots and other automated systems increasingly dominate web traffic. According to data from Cloudflare, bots accounted for 57.5% of HTTP requests to HTML content, compared with 42.5% generated by humans. The figures highlight how quickly the web is changing as artificial intelligence becomes more capable of browsing, searching and interacting with online services.
Bots Now Generate Most Web Requests
Cloudflare’s figures show that automated traffic has moved ahead of human activity when measuring requests to HTML content. This does not mean that machines have replaced people in every aspect of internet use. Humans still account for much of the activity associated with video streaming, social media scrolling, online reading and other forms of content consumption.
However, the statistics demonstrate that the underlying infrastructure of the internet is increasingly being accessed by machines.
Traditional websites were largely designed with human visitors in mind. A person might open a search engine, click several links and visit a handful of websites to find information. AI bots, by contrast, can perform similar tasks at a much greater speed and scale.
AI Agents Are Driving the Change
One of the biggest factors behind the increase is the rapid development of AI agents. These systems can browse websites, collect information, compare options and perform multiple online tasks with limited human involvement.
Consider online shopping as an example. A consumer might visit five or ten websites before deciding which product to purchase. An AI agent could potentially examine thousands of pages within the same period, collecting prices, specifications, reviews and availability.
This ability creates a significant difference in web activity. Every website an automated system visits can generate requests, meaning one AI-assisted task may produce far more traffic than traditional human browsing.
Cloudflare has also reported that more than half of the crawler requests it identified in June were associated with AI training. This suggests that the growing machine presence on the web is not being driven solely by AI assistants completing tasks for users. Large-scale systems are also accessing websites to gather information and improve artificial intelligence models.
Non-Human Traffic Could Grow Dramatically
The current numbers could represent only the beginning of a much larger transformation. If existing trends continue, non-human traffic could eventually reach levels around 1,000 times greater than human traffic within five years.
Such a development would fundamentally change how the internet operates.
The web has traditionally been built around the assumption that humans are the primary audience. Websites compete for human attention, businesses measure visitors and advertisers pay to reach potential customers. A future dominated by automated requests would require many of these assumptions to be reconsidered.
The growth of AI bots could also make raw website traffic increasingly difficult to interpret. A sudden increase in page requests might no longer indicate that more people are interested in a particular product or article. Instead, much of the activity could come from automated systems collecting or processing information.
Not All Automated Traffic Is Harmful
It is important to distinguish between useful automation and malicious activity. Not every machine visiting a website represents a security threat.
AI systems can legitimately retrieve information, compare products, interact with application programming interfaces and help users complete everyday tasks. Search engines and other automated services have also relied on crawlers for years.
The challenge is determining whether automated access benefits the website and its users or creates additional costs and risks.
High volumes of automated requests can consume server resources, increase infrastructure expenses and potentially interfere with services intended for human visitors. Websites may therefore need more sophisticated methods to identify different types of automated activity.
What This Means for Businesses
The rise of automated traffic could have major consequences for companies operating online. Website owners may need to rethink how they measure performance, particularly if visitor numbers increasingly include machines.
Advertising could also be affected. Advertisers generally want to reach real people rather than automated systems. If machine traffic becomes a larger portion of overall web activity, businesses will need better methods of separating human engagement from automated requests.
Search visibility may change as well. AI agents increasingly act as intermediaries between users and websites, potentially reducing the number of direct visits generated by traditional search engines.
For businesses, this creates both opportunities and challenges. Companies that make their information accessible to legitimate AI systems could benefit from increased exposure, while those facing excessive or unwanted automated traffic may need stronger controls.
A New Era for the Internet
The rise of AI bots signals a broader shift from a human-centered internet toward a hybrid environment where people and machines interact continuously.
Humans will remain central to the digital economy, but machines are becoming an increasingly important part of how information moves across the web. As AI agents become faster and more capable, the volume of automated activity is likely to continue growing.
The key challenge will be finding a balance between allowing useful AI systems to access information and protecting websites from excessive, unwanted or harmful automation. The internet may still be built for people, but increasingly, AI bots are becoming some of its busiest visitors.
