The highly anticipated clash between Pakistan and India resumed on Monday, following a delay caused by a wet outfield. Fortunately, no overs were lost due to the delay.
Intermittent rain had been falling since the early morning, and dark clouds loomed overhead in Colombo, with strong winds prevailing. The Sri Lankan weather department had predicted the possibility of heavy rain in the afternoon.
Pakistan had won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match. India had reached a score of 147-2 in 24.1 overs when heavy rain interrupted play. The umpires waited for nearly four hours before deciding to postpone the remainder of the game to the following day.
As per the playing conditions, the match would resume from the point it was halted, with no overs deducted.
Pakistan fielded the same playing XI for this high-stakes encounter, while India made two changes. One change was enforced as Shreyas Iyer suffered a back spasm moments before the toss and was replaced by KL Rahul. Jasprit Bumrah also replaced Mohammad Shami in India’s lineup.
This extra day of play was added at the last minute to the Super Four clash, making it the only game to receive such an advantage, aside from the final, after a previous group match between the two teams was washed out due to rain in Pallekele.
When the rain stopped play on Sunday, Virat Kohli was at eight runs, and KL Rahul was at 17.
In the event of a washout, the teams would share the points.
