China’s foreign ministry has urged the Philippines to return to “peaceful development,” warning that Manila’s deployment of a U.S. medium-range missile system during military exercises could escalate regional tensions and spark an arms race.
The U.S. Typhon missile system, capable of carrying cruise missiles with the potential to target Chinese assets, was utilized in joint exercises earlier this year. Philippine Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro defended the deployment as “legitimate, legal, and beyond reproach.” Additionally, Army Chief Roy Galido announced plans for the Philippines to acquire its own mid-range missile system.
Tensions between China and the Philippines have intensified over overlapping claims in the South China Sea. Manila’s strengthened military ties with Washington have further fueled disputes.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the Philippines for “surrendering its security and national defense” to external powers. Mao argued this decision heightens the risk of geopolitical confrontation and jeopardizes regional peace and stability. She urged the Philippines to pursue strategic autonomy, good neighborliness, and peaceful development.
China has warned it would not remain passive if its security interests are threatened. Meanwhile, the Philippine embassy in Beijing has yet to comment.
The South China Sea remains a contentious region, with China’s sweeping territorial claims clashing with those of the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations.
