Hamas has reported that 33 hostages held in Gaza have been killed during the nearly 14-month conflict between the group and Israel. The group did not disclose the nationalities of the hostages but mentioned that others have gone missing.
In a statement addressed to Israel, Hamas warned, “With the continuation of your crazy war, you could lose your hostages forever. Do what you have to do before it is too late.” A video was later released by Hamas, purportedly explaining how and when the hostages were killed, attributing their deaths to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisions.
The Israeli military has yet to respond to the claims. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continue in Gaza as part of its offensive.
Hostage Negotiations and War Goals
Hamas has called for an end to the war and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the release of remaining hostages. Netanyahu, however, has reiterated that the war will persist until Hamas is fully dismantled and ceases to be a threat.
Background and Humanitarian Impact
The war was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and the abduction of more than 250 hostages. Gaza officials report that Israel’s military response has killed over 44,400 Palestinians, displaced most of the enclave’s population, and caused widespread destruction.
Efforts for de-escalation and humanitarian aid delivery remain critical amid the deepening crisis.
