Meta AI: the new chatbot companion on facebook, whatsapp, and instagram.

If you’re a user of Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram, you may have encountered a new virtual assistant popping up in your feeds, offering insights or responding to search queries. Meet Meta AI, the latest addition to Meta Platforms’ suite of services, hailed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg as “the most intelligent AI assistant” available for public use.

Integrated across Meta’s platforms, Meta AI offers a range of functionalities, from recommending local restaurants to generating images or animations on the fly. Whether you’re planning a night out with friends or seeking information, you can summon Meta AI by typing “@MetaAI” into your chat or search bar.

Despite its touted benefits, the introduction of Meta AI hasn’t been without its challenges. Early encounters with the chatbot led to some quirky interactions, including bizarre exchanges in online communities. While Meta AI has its enthusiasts, some users have expressed a desire to opt out of its services.

Can You Turn It Off?

For users looking to limit or avoid interactions with Meta AI, options are somewhat limited. There’s no straightforward way to completely disable Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp. However, there are some partial solutions available.

Mute… Sort of

On the Facebook mobile app, users can temporarily mute Meta AI by navigating to the search function and tapping on the blue triangle, followed by the blue circle with an “i” inside it. From there, options to mute the chatbot for a specified duration or until manually changed are available. Similar options exist on Instagram.

However, muting Meta AI doesn’t entirely remove its presence. The chatbot’s icon may still appear, and tapping on it will redirect users to the Meta AI field for search queries.

Using Old School Facebook

For those determined to avoid Meta AI altogether, utilizing Facebook’s basic mobile site (mbasic.facebook.com) offers a workaround. While it lacks the advanced features of the main site, it provides a simplified interface without AI integration, catering to users in developing countries with older devices and slower internet connections.

Availability in Other Countries

Currently, Meta AI is accessible in the United States and select countries, including Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. If you reside outside these regions, you’re spared from encounters with the chatbot – at least for now.
