Villagers in Balochistan fatally shoot Indus River dolphin

On Sunday, an unidentified group of villagers in Balochistan tragically killed a 20-month-old Indus River dolphin by shooting it. As per the Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD), the mammal managed to cover a remarkable distance of 150 kilometers from Sukkur Barrage to Balochistan via the Kirthar Canal.

Even though the SWD has launched an inquiry, they are unable to file a formal criminal case as the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Balochistan provincial government.

As of the last survey conducted in 2019, the Indus Dolphin Reserves between the Guddu and Sukkur barrages were found to be home to approximately 1,419 dolphins.

Social media activists have strongly condemned the villagers responsible for shooting the dolphin.
