The Supreme Court on Tuesday declared a Peshawar High Court (PHC) order null and void, which had suspended the appointment of the PK-91 returning officer (RO) – a constituency in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa expressed concern over tactics suggesting an attempt to hinder the country’s elections and questioned the petitioner’s vested interest in the RO’s appointment. The bench noted the potential disruption of the scrutiny of 19 nomination papers for PK-91 in Kohat due to the PHC orders. This verdict reinforces the authority of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), marking the latest instance where the Supreme Court upholds the ECP’s decisions in electoral matters.
