Pakistan Climbs to Sixth in ICC Test Rankings After Annual Update

Pakistan have made notable progress in the latest ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings, moving up from seventh to sixth position after gaining seven rating points in the annual update released by the International Cricket Council (ICC). This update reflects a recalculation of results over a specific period, where older performances are either removed or given less weight, significantly impacting the overall standings. The improvement is a positive sign for Pakistan’s red-ball cricket as they continue to rebuild and strengthen their position in the longest format of the game.

At the top of the rankings, Australia have maintained their dominance, retaining the number one position. The reigning powerhouse of Test cricket further strengthened their lead by adding three more rating points, taking their total to an impressive 131. Their consistent performances across different conditions and against strong opposition have ensured their firm grip on the top spot.

South Africa, the current World Test Champions, remain in second place with 119 points. Like Australia, they also gained three rating points, reflecting their solid performances in recent Test matches. Their ability to deliver consistent results has kept them comfortably ahead of the chasing teams.

India have moved up one position to secure third place with 104 points. Their rise comes at the expense of England, who slipped to fourth position with 102 points. The change in rankings is largely due to the ICC’s annual update methodology, which excludes matches played before a certain cut-off date—in this case, results prior to April 30, 2023. England’s earlier successes, including home series wins against New Zealand and South Africa and a 3-0 away victory in Pakistan, were removed from full-weight calculations, contributing to their drop in rankings.

New Zealand, also known as the Blackcaps, currently occupy the fifth position. Pakistan’s rise to sixth place has pushed Sri Lanka down to seventh, with the latter now holding 86 points compared to Pakistan’s 89. This shift highlights how even minor adjustments in points can significantly affect team standings in a tightly contested ranking system.

Pakistan’s improvement is partly due to the exclusion of England’s dominant series win against them from the full-weightage period, as well as the reduced impact of Pakistan’s 2-0 series loss to Bangladesh in 2024. These recalculations have worked in Pakistan’s favor, allowing them to gain valuable points and climb up the table.

The rest of the top 10 features West Indies in eighth position, followed by Bangladesh in ninth, and Ireland rounding out the rankings in tenth place. While these teams remain lower in the standings, they continue to compete and aim for improvement in future Test cycles.

Looking ahead, Pakistan have a busy Test schedule lined up as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle. Under the leadership of Shan Masood, the team is set to tour Bangladesh for a two-match Test series. The first Test will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka from May 8 to 12, while the second Test is scheduled to take place at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium from May 16 to 20.

These matches present an important opportunity for Pakistan to further improve their ranking and gain momentum in the World Test Championship. Performing well in away conditions, particularly in the subcontinent, will be crucial for the team’s progress.

In addition to the Bangladesh series, Pakistan are also scheduled to play Test series against England, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies later in the year. These fixtures will be key in determining their standing in the rankings and their chances of competing for a spot in the World Test Championship final.

Overall, Pakistan’s rise to sixth position reflects gradual improvement and provides encouragement for players and fans alike. While there is still room for growth, the team’s recent progress indicates that they are moving in the right direction and have the potential to climb even higher in the global Test rankings with consistent performances.
