The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday that a mass polio vaccination campaign targeting over 500,000 children in Gaza will resume on Saturday.
According to the WHO, deteriorating conditions in Gaza—overcrowded shelters, damaged water and sanitation infrastructure, and poor hygiene—create an environment conducive to the fecal-oral transmission of poliovirus.
Additionally, the WHO warned that increased population movement following the current ceasefire could further accelerate the spread of the virus. The vaccination campaign aims to curb the risk and protect vulnerable children in the region.
