India and France have signed a declaration of intent to establish a partnership on advanced and small modular nuclear reactors, the Indian Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday. The agreement was formalized during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France, strengthening bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy.
This partnership aims to enhance collaboration in next-generation nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs), which are considered more flexible, cost-effective, and safer compared to traditional large-scale reactors.
The agreement builds on the long-standing civil nuclear cooperation between India and France, with the two nations previously working together on nuclear power projects, including the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant in Maharashtra.
This move aligns with India’s broader strategy to expand its clean energy capacity, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and achieve its climate goals.
