In a significant move, the Telangana High Court has prohibited children under the age of 16 from attending films in theatres or multiplexes across the state after 11 pm.
The decision came after consultations with child psychologists and other stakeholders, where the court expressed concerns about the potential adverse effects on children’s physical and emotional well-being due to late-night movie screenings.
During a hearing on petitions regarding increased movie ticket prices and permissions for special shows, Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy observed that allowing children to watch films during late hours or early mornings could harm their health. The judge also highlighted the negative impact of excessive late-night screen time on children.
The petitioner’s attorney further argued that attending movies at odd hours could deteriorate children’s overall health, which influenced the court’s ruling.
The court has advised the state government to take appropriate steps and issue directives regulating the entry of children under 16 to theatres before 11 am and after 11 pm.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for February 22, with further updates and actions anticipated.
