Kosovo confirms first case of mpox in traveler from Africa.

Kosovo’s health authorities announced the country’s first confirmed case of mpox, detected in a 30-year-old man who recently returned from a West African country. The man was admitted to the hospital on December 24 with symptoms including fever, chills, and skin lesions on his face and hands.

The Kosovo Institute of Public Health stated that the patient is in stable condition and has been isolated. Authorities have identified and traced all individuals who came into contact with the patient, providing them with guidelines for infection prevention and control.

Mpox Overview

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a mild viral infection with symptoms such as fever, headaches, and skin lesions. While typically not life-threatening, it can spread through close contact with infected individuals.

Global Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the mpox outbreak as a public health emergency since August 2023, following its spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo to neighboring regions. As of late November, WHO continues to monitor and emphasize the need for vigilance as cases emerge in new areas.

Kosovo’s detection of mpox highlights the global reach of the virus and underscores the importance of rapid response measures to contain its spread.
