ChatGPT now available on WhatsApp and via phone service in the US.

OpenAI has expanded the reach of its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by introducing it to WhatsApp and enabling a voice-call service in the United States. This move aims to make artificial intelligence more accessible to a wider audience and challenge competitors like Meta AI.

WhatsApp Integration

WhatsApp’s 2.7 billion global users can now interact with ChatGPT by simply adding the number +1 1800 242 8478 to their contacts. The chatbot operates via text messages and doesn’t require users to log in to an OpenAI account. However, the chatbot’s knowledge is limited to data up to September 2021, and it cannot be added to group chats.

Voice Calls in the US

For users in the United States, OpenAI offers an additional feature: voice conversations with ChatGPT. By calling 1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478), users can engage in AI-driven voice interactions, with a limit of 15 free minutes per month.

OpenAI’s Vision

OpenAI product manager Antonia Woodford highlighted the goal of making AI easier to access:

“We care a lot about continuing to reduce barriers for more people to try out AI and see what it can do for them. We’re really excited that we’re bringing ChatGPT to you through two familiar channels: calling and WhatsApp.”

Usage Guidelines

  • Limitations: The WhatsApp integration supports only text conversations.
  • Terms of Service: OpenAI warns that violations of its terms could lead to users being blocked.
  • Experimental Phase: Availability and limits may change as OpenAI continues testing the service.

Competition with Meta AI

This launch places OpenAI’s ChatGPT in direct competition with Meta’s own AI chatbot, Meta AI, which is gradually being integrated into Meta’s suite of apps like WhatsApp and Messenger.

For a more comprehensive experience, including tools and personalization features, OpenAI recommends using ChatGPT via its official web or app platforms.
