Punjab launches E-Taxi scheme to combat pollution and boost employment

The Punjab government has unveiled an innovative e-taxi scheme aimed at tackling air pollution and providing economic opportunities for unemployed individuals. This initiative combines environmental and economic benefits, marking a significant step toward sustainable urban development.

Under the scheme, online taxi drivers will have access to electric vehicles (EVs) through attractive packages, offered on either down payments or easy installments. Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan highlighted that transitioning to EVs could save drivers up to 40% on fuel costs, increasing their earnings while reducing air pollution.

Key Features of the E-Taxi Scheme:

  1. Eco-Friendly Fleet: A significant portion of the online taxi fleet will transition to electric vehicles, lowering emissions and improving urban air quality.
  2. Affordable Ownership: EVs will be made available to drivers through flexible payment options.
  3. Economic Relief: Reduced fuel costs will translate into higher earnings for drivers.
  4. Job Creation: The scheme will generate employment opportunities for unemployed individuals in Punjab.

The initiative is particularly focused on curbing pollution in urban areas like Lahore, where air quality has become a critical concern. “The growing demand for online taxi services presents an opportunity to innovate and address environmental challenges,” said Bilal Akbar Khan.

This project underscores the Punjab government’s commitment to fostering economic growth while improving environmental conditions, setting an example for sustainable urban mobility solutions.
