Russia launches record drone attack on Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.

Russia launched 188 drones in a nighttime blitz across Ukraine, marking the largest single drone assault since the conflict began, according to Ukraine’s air force. While most of the drones were intercepted, significant damage was reported to apartment buildings and critical infrastructure, including the national power grid. The attack affected 17 regions, though no immediate casualties were reported.

This wave of drone, missile, and glide bomb strikes is part of Russia’s ongoing strategy to target civilian areas and infrastructure, intensifying since mid-2023. In the eastern Donetsk region, where Russia has made notable tactical advances, the battlefront remains active, with Ukraine facing increasing pressure. Ukrainian forces have been struggling with manpower shortages, while Russia’s steady progress is threatening key supply routes, particularly in Donetsk.

As winter approaches, Ukraine is grappling with concerns about the stability of its electricity supply due to continuous Russian attacks. Additionally, there are growing uncertainties regarding future U.S. support following the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

On the battlefield, Ukrainian forces continue to defend critical areas, though Russia would need to capture more than 8,000 square kilometers (3,000 square miles) to fully seize Donetsk, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Ukrainian defenses in the region are not currently at risk of collapse, though the ongoing conflict presents a challenging situation.

In a separate development, a court in Russia’s Kursk region has ordered the detention of British national James Scott Rhys Anderson, who was reportedly captured while fighting with Ukrainian forces. The charges against him remain unclear, as the proceedings were held behind closed doors.
