Boca Juniors head coach Diego Martinez has resigned following the club’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Belgrano on Saturday, marking their third consecutive loss in Argentina’s top-flight league. The 35-time champions currently sit 12th in the table, with only five wins out of 16 matches. Additionally, Boca Juniors have been eliminated from both the Copa de la Liga and Copa Sudamericana after suffering penalty shootout losses.
Martinez, who took the reins in January, informed club president Juan Roman Riquelme of his resignation and expressed gratitude for the opportunity he had at the helm.
In response to the team’s struggles, Riquelme, a former Argentina and Barcelona midfielder, apologized to fans for the lackluster performance, highlighting that the team has secured only one win in their last five league matches, including a loss to their arch-rivals River Plate the previous weekend.
Boca Juniors will be looking to bounce back as they prepare to host Argentinos Juniors next Sunday.
