Former President Advocates for Fair Investigation and Accountability
Former President Dr. Arif Alvi has urged the establishment of an independent commission to ensure a thorough investigation into the May 9 riots incident and to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
This plea follows his meeting with PTI leaders Yasmeen Rashid, Umer Sarfaraz Cheema, and Ijaz Chaudhry at an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, where they are facing charges related to the May 9 violence.
Expressing solidarity with the detained PTI leaders, Dr. Alvi asserted that the public stands firmly behind them for their unwavering support of the party.
He stressed the importance of upholding the choices made by the electorate in elections, alleging that PTI’s mandate was usurped in the general elections.
Attributing PTI’s founder as one of Pakistan’s most distinguished leaders, Dr. Alvi underscored his global recognition as a testament to his significance for the nation.
Advocating for a transparent trial process, he called for the establishment of an independent commission to thoroughly investigate the May 9 violence and ensure the prosecution of the primary perpetrators.
Dr. Yasmeen Rashid, a former provincial minister and one of the detained PTI leaders, shared her resolve while in custody, stating her steadfast commitment to her beliefs despite facing challenging conditions.
She detailed her daily routine, which includes encounters with cats and lizards during the day and devoting the remainder to reading.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dr. Alvi reiterated his support for the formation of an independent commission, echoing sentiments expressed by the DG ISPR during a conference.
He underscored the necessity of considering arguments from all sides to arrive at a just verdict in the case.
