Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has finalized a list of three nominees for the position of Governor of Punjab province. According to sources, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood, and Chaudhry Riaz have been shortlisted for the role.
The decision comes amid ongoing consultations within the PPP regarding the nomination of governors for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Names for the governorship of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to be shortlisted soon after thorough discussions.
It is noteworthy that the announcement of governor nominees for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces by the PPP is scheduled after the presidential election.
PPP’s deliberation on governorship nominees underscores the political negotiations between the federal government and provincial authorities, particularly between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and PPP. It was agreed upon that the Chairman of the Senate would be from PPP, while the Deputy Chairman would be from PML-N. Similarly, the Speaker of the National Assembly would belong to PML-N, and the Deputy Speaker to PPP.
Additionally, the governorship of Sindh and Balochistan provinces will be held by nominees from PML-N and PPP, respectively.
The nomination of candidates for governorship is a significant political maneuver, reflecting the distribution of power and responsibilities among major political parties in Pakistan’s federal and provincial governments.
