Tony Gustavsson, the head coach of Australia’s women’s football team, has confirmed his commitment to remain in charge until the Paris 2024 Olympics. Speculation arose about Gustavsson being considered for the coaching role of Sweden’s men’s national team following the resignation of Janne Andersen.
Despite reports of Gustavsson being among the candidates interviewed for the Sweden role, the 50-year-old emphasized his dedication to the Matildas and expressed his focus on the team’s journey toward qualification and participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In a statement released by Football Australia, Gustavsson stated, “I’m passionate about the Matildas, and I’m fully focused on qualification and participation at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Our team’s journey towards this goal is my primary focus and commitment.”
Australia’s women’s team, the Matildas, recently navigated successfully through the second phase of Asia’s preliminaries for the Olympic Games with victories over the Philippines, Iran, and Taiwan in November. They are set to face Uzbekistan in February, with the winner earning qualification for the 12-team football tournament in Paris.
Football Australia affirmed Gustavsson’s contractual commitment, extending until the Paris 2024 Olympics. While acknowledging speculation about Gustavsson and the Swedish men’s national team, Football Australia refrained from commenting on speculative reports or potential future engagements outside current contracts.
The governing body stated that discussions regarding a possible extension of Gustavsson’s contract would be held at an appropriate time in the future, adhering to standard procedures.
