WhatsApp Guest Calls Let Anyone Join Without an Account

WhatsApp Guest Calls

WhatsApp guest calls are introducing a new way for people to join conversations without creating a WhatsApp account or downloading the app. The feature allows users to invite friends, family members, colleagues, or clients to audio and video calls through a simple web link. Guests can join directly from their browser, making it easier to connect with people who do not use the messaging platform.

According to WhatsApp, guest calls are free, have no time limit, and retain end-to-end encryption. The feature is designed to simplify online communication by removing the need for every participant to register for an account before joining a conversation.

How WhatsApp Guest Calls Work

Although guests do not need an account, the person creating the call must have an active WhatsApp account. The process begins in the app’s Calls tab, where users can tap the plus (+) button and create a call link.

Once generated, the link can be shared with anyone through a preferred communication channel. Recipients can open it in a compatible web browser, enter their name, and request to join the conversation.

Guests are placed in a waiting room until the host approves their entry. This additional step gives the person managing the call control over who participates and helps prevent unwanted visitors from joining automatically.

The feature supports both individual and group conversations, with up to 32 participants in a single call. This makes it suitable for personal catch-ups, remote discussions, and small online meetings.

Features Available to Guest Participants

WhatsApp guest calls provide several useful features familiar to regular users. Participants can share their screens, react with emojis, and raise their hands during a conversation.

Screen sharing can be particularly helpful for people who need to demonstrate a presentation, explain a document, or walk someone through a process. Emoji reactions and the hand-raising option also give participants ways to interact without interrupting the speaker.

However, guest access comes with certain restrictions. Guests cannot view other participants’ phone numbers, send messages during the call, or invite additional people. These limitations help distinguish guest participation from the full experience available to registered WhatsApp users.

The host retains control throughout the conversation. They can remove individual guests whenever necessary or end the call for everyone. This makes the host responsible for managing participation and maintaining control over the meeting.

End-to-End Encryption Remains Available

Privacy is an important consideration when people join online conversations through shared links. WhatsApp says guest calls continue to use end-to-end encryption, a security feature intended to prevent outsiders from accessing call content.

The web client generates a unique identifier used to encrypt the call. This mechanism allows people without regular WhatsApp accounts to participate while maintaining the platform’s stated encryption protections.

However, users should still share invitation links carefully. Anyone who receives a link may attempt to request entry, so hosts should verify participants before approving them. The waiting-room system provides an additional opportunity to check who is joining.

Google Calendar and Outlook Integration Planned

WhatsApp is also developing calendar integrations that could make guest calls more convenient for professional and personal use.

The planned integration with Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook is expected to allow users to add WhatsApp call links directly to calendar invitations through a plugin. Recipients would then be able to open the invitation and join the scheduled call, even if they do not have a WhatsApp account.

This could simplify meeting arrangements for teams, businesses, freelancers, and clients who use different communication platforms. Instead of asking every attendee to install an app or sign up for an account, organizers could share a link as part of the regular scheduling process.

WhatsApp has indicated that the calendar feature is expected later this year, although availability will depend on the rollout.

Gradual Rollout for Android and iOS

WhatsApp guest calls are gradually rolling out to users running the latest versions of the app on Android and iOS. Because the release is phased, some users may not immediately see the option to create a guest call link.

Updating WhatsApp to the latest available version is a sensible first step for anyone who wants to check whether the feature is available. The company has not announced a specific date for making guest calls available to all users.

WhatsApp guest calls could make online communication more accessible by allowing people to participate without registering for an account. With browser-based access, support for up to 32 participants, useful calling tools, and end-to-end encryption, the feature offers a simpler way to connect with people outside the WhatsApp community.

The planned calendar integrations could further improve its usefulness for scheduled meetings. For now, the gradual rollout means users may need to wait before the option appears in their app.
