WhatsApp is testing a new feature that makes it easier to access and share WhatsApp Instagram Facebook media without leaving the messaging app. The new integration allows selected users to browse photos, videos, stories, posts and reels from their connected Instagram and Facebook accounts directly through WhatsApp.
The feature is currently being rolled out to some beta testers using the latest versions of WhatsApp on Android and iOS. According to WABetaInfo, broader availability is expected to expand gradually over the coming weeks.
Instagram and Facebook Content Comes to WhatsApp
WhatsApp has been expanding its connection with other Meta platforms through Accounts Center. The system gives users more options for managing their accounts across WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.
The latest update takes that integration further by adding Instagram and Facebook as media sources inside WhatsApp’s media picker.
Once accounts are connected, users can browse content they have previously shared on Instagram or Facebook without switching between different applications. This could make it easier to reuse existing photos, videos, stories and other media when communicating with friends or updating a WhatsApp status.
The WhatsApp Instagram Facebook media integration is designed around content already associated with the user’s connected accounts.
How the New Feature Works
The new functionality appears within WhatsApp’s existing media picker. When users open the picker, they can switch to a list view where different media sources are displayed.
With the latest beta update, Instagram and Facebook can appear alongside other available sources.
Users can tap the dropdown menu at the top of the media picker and select either Instagram or Facebook. After choosing a platform, the available content appears in a grid similar to the existing WhatsApp media interface.
This means users can scroll through previously shared content and select a recent story, an older post or a reel they want to send or reuse.
The WhatsApp Instagram Facebook media feature does not require users to manually download content from Instagram or Facebook before sharing it on WhatsApp.
Available in Chats and Status Updates
The integration is not limited to private conversations. WhatsApp is also making the new media sources available when users create Status updates.
For example, someone who previously published a photo or video on Instagram can potentially select that content directly from the WhatsApp media picker when preparing a new Status.
The same option is available inside WhatsApp conversations. Users can select Instagram or Facebook from the media-source dropdown and choose content to send in a chat.
This gives the WhatsApp Instagram Facebook media feature two major uses: sharing content with individual contacts and reusing it for WhatsApp Status updates.
Accounts Center Connection Required
Although the feature expands Meta’s cross-platform integration, users are not required to connect their WhatsApp account to Accounts Center.
Accounts Center remains optional for people who prefer to keep their Meta accounts separate. However, users who want to access Instagram and Facebook content from WhatsApp must link their relevant accounts through Accounts Center.
Without that connection, Instagram and Facebook will not appear as media sources in WhatsApp’s media picker.
The integration also works in a limited direction. Instagram and Facebook do not gain access to media stored within WhatsApp simply because the accounts are connected. WhatsApp continues to keep WhatsApp media on the user’s device.
Privacy and Encryption
WhatsApp has previously stated that connecting accounts through Accounts Center does not change the end-to-end encryption protecting personal messages and calls.
This means users can choose whether they want the convenience of cross-platform account integration while continuing to use WhatsApp’s existing protections for private conversations and calls.
The WhatsApp Instagram Facebook media feature is therefore primarily focused on making content sharing more convenient rather than changing how WhatsApp messages are protected.
Beta Rollout Underway
The new functionality is currently available only to some beta testers running recent WhatsApp updates on Android and iOS. Having the latest beta version does not necessarily guarantee access because WhatsApp often enables new features gradually through server-side rollouts.
Some testers may therefore see Instagram and Facebook in their media picker while others using the same app version may not have the option yet.
WhatsApp has not announced a specific date for a full public rollout.
What It Could Mean for WhatsApp Users
The WhatsApp Instagram Facebook media integration could make content sharing more convenient for people who regularly use multiple Meta platforms.
Instead of opening Instagram or Facebook, finding previously published content and downloading or sharing it separately, users may be able to complete the process directly through WhatsApp.
The feature also highlights Meta’s broader effort to connect its major platforms while allowing users to manage their accounts through Accounts Center.
The functionality remains in beta testing. If testing proceeds as planned, more WhatsApp users could eventually gain direct access to their Instagram and Facebook content from the app’s media picker.
