The Imran Khan hospital transfer dispute has intensified after the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) offered sharply different accounts of how the Supreme Court’s directions regarding the former prime minister’s medical examination were implemented. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar maintained that the government had fully complied with the court’s instructions, while PTI officials argued that the order had not been followed properly.
Tarar made the remarks during a press conference in Islamabad, where he urged the PTI to avoid turning a medical matter into a political controversy. He said health issues should be treated as medical and legal matters and should not become part of political confrontation.
Government Defends Medical Arrangements
The dispute followed the transfer of Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a medical examination. The Supreme Court had previously directed authorities to move him to Shifa International Hospital for medical assessment.
According to Tarar, the government ensured that doctors from Shifa International Hospital were present at PIMS during the examination. He argued that this arrangement fulfilled the purpose of the court’s order while allowing the required medical assessment to take place.
The minister said Imran Khan was examined in the presence of his sister and personal doctors. Referring to what he described as an initial medical report, Tarar said the PTI founder was in good health.
He also insisted that the government had not interrupted Imran’s medical treatment at any point. Authorities, he said, had continued monitoring his health while keeping the public informed about developments.
The Imran Khan hospital transfer issue has nevertheless remained controversial because the location of the examination differed from the hospital specifically mentioned in the Supreme Court’s order.
PTI Challenges Government’s Position
The PTI has rejected the government’s interpretation and taken the matter back to the Supreme Court. The party filed a contempt petition, alleging that the court’s instructions concerning the former premier’s hospital transfer had been violated.
PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja described the move as a legal action rather than a political campaign. He argued that the party was seeking enforcement of the court’s order through constitutional and legal channels.
Raja also clarified that the contempt petition was filed by Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, rather than being a formal PTI petition. He rejected the government’s claims that security concerns justified the events surrounding the hospital.
The disagreement highlights a larger question over how court orders concerning prisoners’ medical treatment should be implemented when security, medical and administrative considerations overlap.
Dispute Over Shifa Hospital Gathering
Another point of contention involves the gathering of PTI supporters outside Shifa International Hospital.
Tarar argued that groups of people had gathered outside the hospital and described the situation as a security risk. He questioned who had organised the gathering and said such activity could conflict with the court’s instructions against politicising the medical issue.
The minister further argued that the court had not intended the former premier’s medical treatment to become a platform for political statements or demonstrations.
The PTI, however, maintained that the legal challenge was focused on the alleged failure to implement the Supreme Court’s order rather than an attempt to create political pressure.
Government Raises Broader Prisoner Issue
The Imran Khan hospital transfer controversy also reflects a broader concern raised by the government regarding medical facilities for prisoners.
Tarar said the government had asked in its review petition whether similar medical arrangements would have to be provided to every prisoner. He questioned whether transferring prisoners to private hospitals in comparable circumstances could create a broader precedent for the criminal justice system.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry also defended the government’s position. He said Imran Khan was being examined regularly in jail and that authorities could arrange hospital treatment whenever medically necessary.
Chaudhry accused the PTI of attempting to gain political sympathy from the situation, while the party rejected such claims.
The Imran Khan hospital transfer dispute is now likely to remain a legal matter until the Supreme Court considers the competing claims and determines whether its earlier directions were properly implemented.
For the government, the issue is about following the law while maintaining security and ensuring that medical arrangements remain available within the prison system. For the PTI and Imran Khan’s family, the central concern is ensuring that the court’s directions regarding his medical care are followed exactly.
The controversy also demonstrates how quickly health-related issues involving major political figures can become part of wider political and legal disputes.
