Political Statements and Preparations for General Elections in Pakistan

The issue of announcing a definitive date for general elections in Pakistan has become a puzzle, with Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar expressing that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission and not his mandate. He emphasized the need for collaboration with the Election Commission in conducting the elections. It’s worth noting that the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had faced delays before his appointment as Prime Minister. Pakistan is currently in a transitional democracy rather than a stable one.

To address the election-related matters and preparations, an important meeting was held under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, which involved a detailed review of the Election Commission’s arrangements and the Punjab government’s readiness. During this gathering, the Chief Election Commissioner stated that the time for general elections is approaching, assuring that they will be held on schedule, and emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness.

Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar emphasized the need to respect each other’s political opinions and move beyond biases to contribute to national development and progress. He also clarified that Afghan refugees are not being forcibly deported but rather illegal residents are being encouraged to leave the country, in line with global visa regulations.

Addressing students at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), he expressed high expectations from Pakistan’s youth and urged them not to promote baseless propaganda on social media. He pointed out that there are limits to freedom of speech and certain events, like the New Meean incident, cannot be endorsed on any platform. Kakar reiterated that Pakistan is currently in a transitional democracy and not a stable one.

He stated that there are restrictions on freedom of expression and any unlawful activity will be subject to legal consequences. The legislation is the prerogative of the Parliament, and no one is above the law.

The issue of determining the election date in Pakistan remains unclear, with the Prime Minister deferring this responsibility to the Election Commission. However, the Chief Election Commissioner remains confident that the elections will proceed as scheduled, emphasizing transparency and fairness in the process. These statements highlight the complex political landscape in Pakistan and the need for cooperation and respect among political leaders to ensure a smooth transition of power through democratic elections.
