Two spectators die of cardiac arrests during ATP finals in turin.

Tragedy struck the ATP Finals in Turin as two spectators passed away after suffering cardiac arrests on the second day of the tournament at the Inalpi Arena, the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) and the ATP confirmed on Tuesday.

According to officials, the victims, aged 70 and 78, suffered medical emergencies at separate times on Monday. Play was temporarily suspended during the opening singles match between Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz following an announcement about a medical emergency in the stands.

“The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) and the ATP express their deepest condolences following the tragic passing of two spectators yesterday during the ATP Finals in Turin,” the organizations said in a joint statement.

“On-site medical and emergency personnel responded immediately, providing all possible assistance. Despite prompt intervention and transfer to hospital, both sadly passed away,” the statement added.

The ATP Finals, hosted at the 12,000-capacity Inalpi Arena since 2021, will continue as scheduled through November 16. Turin remains confirmed as the host city through 2026, with Italy set to retain the prestigious event until 2030.

Large crowds attended Monday’s matches, cheering for local favorite Musetti and defending champion Jannik Sinner, who later defeated Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime in the evening session.

In Tuesday’s play, Carlos Alcaraz moved closer to clinching the year-end world number one ranking for the second time after defeating Taylor Fritz 6-7 (2/7), 7-5, 6-3 in the Jimmy Connors Group. The five-time Grand Slam champion will qualify for the semifinals if Alex de Minaur overcomes Lorenzo Musetti in the day’s second match.

“I’m really happy that I was able to come back and find my good tennis,” Alcaraz said. “I just tried to make the most of the opportunities he gave me — we played great tennis and some great points.”
