Proteas return home as world test champions, eye Zimbabwe series.

Thousands of jubilant fans gathered at Johannesburg’s main airport on Wednesday to welcome home the South African cricket team, fresh off their historic World Test Championship victory over Australia at Lord’s.

Led by captain Temba Bavuma and head coach Shukri Conrad, the Proteas ended a 27-year wait for a major ICC trophy with a five-wicket win on Saturday. It marks South Africa’s first global title since the 1998 ICC Knockout Trophy.

Bavuma and Conrad were the first to emerge, proudly holding the championship Mace. They were followed by the rest of the squad, who greeted fans with flowers, handshakes, autographs, and heartfelt embraces.

Markram and Rabada Shine in Final

Opening batter Aiden Markram rebounded from a first-innings duck with a heroic 136 in the second innings, steering South Africa to victory with a day and a half to spare. Pacer Kagiso Rabada starred with the ball, claiming nine wickets in the final and cementing his status as a world-class match-winner.

Fans Reflect on an Emotional Journey

Among the crowd were dedicated supporters like 35-year-old accountant Brian Gabela, who said:

“They have suffered so many heartbreaks during the past two decades. Now we are champions of the world.”

Mandy Tshabalala, 37, came with her teenage son, Monthati, whose favorite player is Rabada.

“I’ve been supporting the Proteas since childhood. It’s emotional to see them finally lift a trophy.”

Next Up: Zimbabwe Tour

With the celebrations underway, South Africa will quickly turn their attention to the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, starting June 28 in Bulawayo. Bavuma will continue to lead the side, while key players Markram and Rabada will be rested.

The squad features five uncapped players, including the Titans’ rising stars Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Lesego Senokwane. Pretorius, just 19, impressed with three centuries and a 72.66 average in the recent domestic four-day competition. Senokwane also earned his call-up with consistent performances, including two centuries and 559 runs.

Both youngsters recently featured in South Africa A’s series against West Indies A.

Busy Schedule Ahead

After the Test series, the Proteas will stay in Harare for a seven-match T20 tournament featuring Zimbabwe and New Zealand, as preparations begin for the next phase of international cricket.
