Instagram exploring standalone reels app amid TikTok uncertainty.

Instagram is considering launching a separate app for its short-form video feature, Reels, according to chief Adam Mosseri, The Information reported.

The move comes as Meta looks to capitalize on TikTok’s uncertain future in the U.S., aiming to offer users a dedicated video-scrolling experience.

Meta has yet to comment on the report, but the company has already made moves in the short-form video space. In January, it introduced Edits, a video-editing app seen as a competitor to CapCut, the popular TikTok-owned editing tool.

This wouldn’t be Meta’s first attempt at a standalone short-video app—Lasso, launched in 2018, failed to gain traction and was eventually shut down. However, with Reels already integrated into Instagram, a dedicated app could give the feature a stronger identity in the face of TikTok’s potential ban in the U.S.
