American tenor brian jagde to star in la scala prestigious season opener.

American tenor Brian Jagde has been tapped for the lead role of Don Alvaro in La Scala’s highly anticipated gala season premiere of Verdi’s La Forza del Destino this Saturday. Jagde replaces the celebrated Jonas Kaufmann in the performance, marking his third appearance at the iconic Milan opera house alongside soprano Anna Netrebko.

Jagde, who recently sang the same role in Barcelona, has stepped in for La Scala productions before, notably replacing Roberto Alagna in Turandot this summer. His participation in the prestigious opening night event is a rare honor for an American artist, given the tradition of European dominance in La Scala’s history.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Jagde expressed his excitement: “I’m happy to be their guy. Every artist wants to not just perform there, but have great success there.” Known for its passionate and discerning audience, La Scala’s reception of Jagde’s previous performances has been positive, further cementing his growing reputation in the opera world.

Jagde’s journey to opera began unexpectedly. Initially studying computer science and business, he discovered his passion for classical singing during a music program at Purchase College. Since then, the 45-year-old tenor has embraced opera as the “purest expression of the unadulterated voice.”

His performance this Saturday represents not only a personal achievement but a significant moment for American tenors on the European opera stage.
