The United States has unveiled a fresh military support package for Ukraine, featuring additional air defense capabilities, artillery munitions, mine-clearing equipment, and medical vehicles.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this new assistance, which encompasses more mine-clearing equipment, air defense missiles, artillery ammunition, HIMAR (High Mobility Artillery Rocket) systems, and over three million rounds of small-arms ammunition. Blinken emphasized the unwavering commitment of the United States and its allies to stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary.
It’s important to note that this equipment is financed through previously approved funds by Congress.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the United States has already provided more than $43 billion in military aid to Ukraine. President Joe Biden recently sought Congress’s approval for an additional $24 billion in assistance.
While there is widespread bipartisan support in Congress for aiding Ukraine, some far-right Republicans, particularly those aligned with former President Donald Trump, advocate for reducing such assistance.
Ukrainian forces initiated a counteroffensive in the eastern and southern regions in early June. However, their progress has been slow due to Russian minefields and trenches obstructing their advance in the south.
