A nationwide movement decrying the surge in electricity bills has gained relentless momentum, with citizens taking to the streets and resorting to symbolic acts of burning their bills in protest.
The pervasive issue of inflated power bills has ignited a wave of demonstrations across the country, spanning from Karachi to Khyber. Regrettably, in some areas, these protests have taken a violent turn.
In Karachi, citizens vehemently voiced their dissent against exorbitant bills issued by K-Electric, the city’s sole power provider. Frustrated residents have expressed their grievances, noting that the bills they receive exceed their monthly salaries, painting a grim picture of financial strain.
Peshawar saw a sizable throng of individuals converging onto the streets in a powerful display of unity. Determined citizens have declared their unwillingness to remain silent in the face of what they perceive as profound ‘injustice.’ In a symbolic gesture of protest, traders from Ganj Bazaar and Lahore Square set fire to their electricity bills.
Meanwhile, in Rawalpindi, demonstrators congregated at Committee Chowk to express their indignation, setting ablaze their bills and concurrently demanding the government’s intervention to alleviate the burden of imposed taxes on electricity.
In Gujranwala, protesters encircled the Gujranwala Electric Power Company office, decrying the escalating costs of electricity.
These sentiments of frustration and discontent have reverberated to other cities, including Narowal, Attock, Sargodha, and Haripur, where similar demonstrations have taken place, all decrying the exorbitant electricity bills.
It’s worth noting that the Caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaarul Haq Kakar, has called for an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister’s House on Sunday to deliberate on the pressing issue of skyrocketing electricity bills, indicating the government’s recognition of the gravity of the situation.
