World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler warmed up for the Masters with a solid start at the Houston Open, carding a bogey-free five-under-par 65 on Thursday. Scheffler’s performance placed him just one stroke behind the first-round co-leaders, Taylor Moore and Wilson Furr, who both shot impressive rounds to top the leaderboard at Memorial Park Golf Course.
Taylor Moore recovered from an early bogey to post an impressive six-under-par 64, highlighted by an eagle and five birdies throughout his round. Moore’s exceptional play propelled him to a share of the lead alongside Wilson Furr, who surged in the latter stages of his round to also card a six-under-par 64. Furr, ranked 276th globally, closed his round in spectacular fashion with an eagle and two birdies in his final five holes.
Despite missing the green at his first three holes, Scheffler remained composed and managed to save par on each occasion. He then found his rhythm, sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole, followed by additional birdies on the 17th, second, third, and fifth holes. Despite hitting only 11 of 18 greens in regulation, Scheffler’s exceptional putting skills saw him needing just 25 putts for the round.
Scheffler’s consistent performance marked his 28th consecutive round under par this year, a record on the PGA Tour since 1983. Moreover, Scheffler, who recently battled neck issues, expressed satisfaction with his physical condition ahead of the Masters, the first major tournament of the year.
Following his victories at the Players Championship and Bay Hill, Scheffler’s form continues to peak as he eyes success at Augusta National, where he triumphed in 2022. Scheffler’s strong start at the Houston Open places him tied for third alongside Americans Davis Riley and Joe Highsmith, who both showcased impressive rounds to stay within striking distance of the lead.
Moore and Furr’s exceptional performances highlighted a thrilling opening round at the Houston Open, setting the stage for an exciting weekend of golf ahead.
