The Sindh High Court (SHC) has granted acceptance to the petition filed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), requesting a hearing on the issue of not allotting reserved seats in the provincial assembly. Justice Zulfikar Ahmed approved the request for an urgent hearing, scheduled for today, as presented by Barrister Ali Tahir.
The petitioner highlighted that despite election rigging, independent candidates supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured significant victories and lawfully joined the SIC. As per regulations, the SIC should be allocated two reserved seats for women and one minority seat. However, the Election Commission (ECP) allegedly deprived the SIC of its rightful share of seats.
The petition urges the court to declare the ECP decision as unconstitutional and illegal. It is worth noting that the SIC has taken legal action by approaching the Lahore and Peshawar High Courts against ECP decisions, leading to the latter’s directive prohibiting selected candidates from taking the oath until March 13.
