Pneumonia continues to exact a toll on lives in Punjab, with seven additional children succumbing to the disease in the past 24 hours.
The Punjab Health Department reported a total of 942 new pneumonia cases in the province within the last day, with Lahore alone confirming 212 new patients, as per reports from private news channels.
In the ongoing month, Punjab has witnessed 244 pneumonia-related deaths, with Lahore recording 50 fatalities on its own. Health experts attribute this alarming increase to the impact of smog-related pollution during the winter season.
They underscore that the prevalent smog, typical during winter months, significantly contributes to the surge in pneumonia cases.
Pneumonia, an infection affecting the lungs and often caused by viruses, can develop following symptoms of a cold or flu. Its severity can range from mild to severe, with children aged five or younger being more susceptible.
Punjab’s health authorities are actively addressing the spike in pneumonia cases, stressing the importance of public awareness and preventive measures to contain the infection’s spread.
