Pioneering nerve transfer surgery offers hope for paralyzed hand.

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a man paralyzed in a severe road accident may regain the use of his hand following a pioneering nerve transfer operation at Turin City Hospital in Italy. Surgeons transferred part of the man’s sciatic nerve, controlling the movement of his amputated foot, to his brachial plexus, which connects nerves from the spinal cord to the shoulder, arm, and hand. This groundbreaking surgery, a first of its kind, aims to restore mobility to the patient’s hand, offering potential implications for brain plasticity and neuro studies. The patient, Marcello Gaviglio, will undergo post-operative care for around 5 months before the success of the procedure can be determined.
