Innovative magnetic nano-pillared adsorbent offers breakthrough solution for microplastic removal.

Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, led by Professor Nicky Eshtiaghi, have developed a magnetic nano-pillared adsorbent to tackle the global issue of microplastic pollution. Unlike existing technologies, this powder additive removes smaller microplastics at an accelerated rate within just one hour. It can efficiently eliminate microplastics 1,000 times smaller than those detectable by current wastewater treatment plants. The breakthrough offers a promising solution for addressing mixed contaminants in water, with the material being cost-effective, sustainable, and leaving no secondary pollutants or additional carbon footprint. The team hopes to collaborate with wastewater treatment plants to implement this innovative technology for more effective water purification.
